Grand Theft Auto 6 preorders are finally live. It feels like it should be a time of celebration, but there's still a cloud hanging over Rockstar's approach to physical copies.
There's no actual game disc in the box, just a download code, which isn't exactly what most people think of when they hear the words "physical edition".
That's going to frustrate physical media advocates, myself included. Still, outrage and sales don't always move in the same direction.
I can still see why some people would want it. Maybe it's a collector's item. Maybe it's a memento. Maybe it's just a little piece of gaming history sitting on a shelf somewhere.
After all, this is probably going to be the biggest game launch of all time. Owning the box for that alone might be enough reason for some people.
Some people are already taking things a step further by making their own 'GTA 6 Collector's Edition Display Set,' over on Etsy, including a custom case and disc, for $55.
But what if you're not interested in any of that? Well, there's another argument for opting for the boxed edition, and it's a slightly more boring, grown-up one: money.
The global economy isn't exactly in great shape right now. While that's probably not going to stop millions of people from buying GTA 6, an $80 price tag is likely still enough to make some people pause for thought and potentially delay their purchase, or consider an alternative.
Thanks to preorder guarantees at most major online retailers, anyone opting for the plastic box won't be charged until their it ships in November. In other words, you can reserve a copy now of GTA 6, and worry about paying for it later.
So, should you preorder digitally or via an online retailer? If buying digitally, the biggest conundrum is more likely to be whether you're willing to part with 100 bucks for the Ultimate Edition.
But if you're not thrilled about paying $80/$100 today for a game you won't actually be playing until November, preordering through Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, etc, could be a sensible option to consider.
Yet this actually raises another important question: is there genuinely any rush to preorder at all? One of the biggest reasons I expect GTA 6 preorders to be a lot more manageable than something like the Nintendo Switch 2 or PS5 launch is simple: it's software.
There isn't a limited Collector's Edition packed with statues and steelbooks that's going to disappear in 30 seconds. There's a Standard Edition and an Ultimate Edition. That's basically it. Everyone is buying one of two versions of the exact same download.
The only caveat I can hesitantly muster up is that Rockstar has said its "physical" preorders, a term it's playing fairly loose with given you're buying a plastic box with a download code, are available "while stock lasts".
That suggests there is at least some limit to how many boxed copies are being produced. Does that mean they'll be impossible to find? Probably not. Does it mean Rockstar has decided on a certain number of plastic cases, printed them all, and called it a day? ...Possibly?
If you're the sort of person who desperately wants a GTA 6 box with a PlayStation or Xbox logo slap across the top, then maybe it's fine to lock in your preorder as soon as you can. Everyone else, you can probably relax.
At the end of the day, both options get you exactly the same game (albeit I guess the digital-only Ultimate Edition does have more content included?).
If you're definitely buying the game, the real question to answer is whether you'd rather pay now, or later, and whether a plastic box on your shelf means anything to you.
Update: There are also now rumors of Rockstar releasing a "proper" physical edition, disc included, post launch. While this is yet to be confirmed, I wanted to further include the speculation, as it may still help inform your purchasing decision.
Should You Buy a Console for GTA 6?
The only other factor to consider in the "Digital vs Physical/Boxed" debate is anyone who does not own a current gen system. That's because the most compelling reason to purchase GTA 6 via a retailer will be, you guessed it, console bundle deals!
While we've not had any official bundle offerings yet, there is a new promo now available at Best Buy that is... close enough.
The gist is that Best Buy is currently giving away $50 gift cards to anyone buying both GTA 6 and a PS5 or Xbox console from now until launch on Nov. 19.
If you're looking for the most affordable option to take advantage of this deal, I'd suggest opting for a refurb PS5 at $499.99.
While that's still pricey, especially compared to some Black Friday deals from a few years ago, it's the best new console owners are going to get in 2026.
Thankfully, Best Buy also has a 12-month no-interest finance option ($41.67/mo for the PS5), for those interested in spreading the cost out even more.
