What Is Call of Duty: Black Ops 7?

Call Of Duty Black Ops 7 Developer Overview Gamescom 2025

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is a sequel to last year's installment – something that doesn't usually happen in the CoD release schedule, which in the past has hopped around between mini-series and development studios. In a first for CoD, the two games were developed concurrently by Treyarch and Raven Software.

Black Ops 7 takes place in 2035, which means it picks up a couple decades after Black Ops 6 (which is set in 1991), but also after the future missions in Black Ops 2 (which are set in 2025). Let's just say the timeline is somewhat complicated.

The campaign this time around can be played solo or co-op. As usual it's a globetrotting story, with levels set in places like Japan and the Mediterranean coast. The main theme of the plot seems to be fear and psychological warfare. To that end, hallucinogenic drugs play a role in the story, adding a surreal quality to at least some of the levels.

Multiplayer mode kicks off with 16 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps at launch. There's a new multiplayer mode called Skirmish that's a large-scale, multi-objective mode. Round-based Zombies mode is back. There's a lot packed into the game. Check out our Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 hands-on preview for more info.
