Gears of War: E-Day Is Xbox Console Exclusive, Release Date Revealed - IGN Image

Gears of War: E-Day kicked off the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 with a first look at gameplay, a release date of October 6, 2026, and confirmation that it will be an Xbox console exclusive.

Our first look at The Coalition’s Gears prequel game follows an armorless (and more mobile) Marcus Fenix as he shoots through the streets of a city on Sera as Emergeance Day kicks off. You can see that first gameplay trailer below.

Regular civilians can be seen being torn apart as the Locust horde makes its grand, gory debut. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma then followed the presentation to confirm that this next game will not come to PS5.

While it’s nice to see Gears of War: E-Day give players that October release date, PlayStation fans may be torn to hear that it will only launch for Xbox when it comes to its console presence. Preorders are also now live at most major retailers.

Microsoft's promise to keep Gears of War: E-Day off of competing consoles may come as a surprise, but the above footage was anything but. This is a third-person prequel that already looks like it fits right in with the rest of The Coalition's gritty franchise, as Marcus and Dom can be seen blasting, stabbing, and cutting through Grubs from any cover they can find. The biggest gameplay change so far seems to be how players can move, as Dom can be seen quickly climbing and leaping over small gaps and sliding to safety.

The Gears of War: E-Day gameplay reveal was almost immediately followed by its own dedicated Direct presentation, where The Coalition brought fans behind the scenes to talk more about how the latest entry returns to the series' roots. Set before the original Gears of War and built with Unreal Engine 5, the story follows Marcus and Dom in the city of Kalona. Just as the veteran duo begins to readjust to life while grieving the loss of Dom's older brother, Carlos, demons sprout from the earth, kicking off the series' infamous Emergeance Day. Its campaign can be played alone, with a second player via two-player splitscreen, or with up to four players in online co-op.

The direct also dived into how the team built every street and building in what they called "the largest, most complex location" in Gears history, but it also talked about how that city will fall apart before players' eyes. The campaign is one cog in the machine that is the Gears of War franchise, but E-Day will have its own take on multiplayer, too. In an Xbox Wire post, The Coalition confirmed that 4v4 Versus mode is back. There's also Horde Siege, a 12-player PvE mode that sees three squads group up to fight off Locust across Kalona in large city maps.

Microsoft has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day is coming to PC via Xbox on PC and Steam, cloud, and Xbox Series X | S. The company has also said it will not bring it to PS5 at a later date.

An open beta will take place August 6, 2026, with players who pre-order their copy promised to receive early access. If you need to catch up on all of the biggest reveals, you can check out everything announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026.
